Duramax is a name for General motors’ diesel engine models, that were designed for light and medium duty pickup trucks. They were designed by Isuzu in a joint enterprise involving GM and Isuzu, the work took place in Moraine, Ohio. At first it was installed in Chevy and GMC trucks, but was later adopted for use in vans, pickups and medium duty trucks. So let’s review some of those engines.
LB7 was first introduced in 1999 and has continued to be produced until 2004; this 32 valve engine features high pressure common-rail direct injection and also a special composite design cylinder head. The most common problem with this engine is injector failure; it is in fact so frequent that that warranty had to be extended to cover overheating and blown head gaskets. But if properly maintained, this engine can prove to be quite reliable and fuel efficient. Chevrolet Kodiak, GMC topkick, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra all feature this engine. This was their first engine to feature the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve in order to meet the emission standards. This type of engine also features easier injector replacement. It can be found in 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha and Chevrolet Silverado.
The LBZ features an improved engine computer, which increases torque quite drastically compared to the previous version.
The LMM comes in combination with the 6-speed Allison transmission, Trident Iceni featured this version.
This engine has not yet been commercially launched and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it will be soon. That’s a shame really since duramax diesel trucks for sale featuring this engine would have the power of medium duty trucks in a small package. This is the only duramax that will be 4.5L in size.
This is the latest version of the Isuzu/GM Duramax V8 diesel engine with the improvements being made mostly in the emission department.
