Members of the Lafourche Parish Council will serve as the Ward 10 Veterans’ District Board of Commissioners.
Upon its formation Tuesday at a special meeting, the board immediately adopted a resolution calling for a proposed $1 million tax for Ward 10 to be placed on the Nov. 15 ballot. If approved, one of the major projects would be transporting veterans to the VA hospital in New Orleans and the purchase of related equipment such as handicapped-accessible vans.
Pearl Harbor survivor and Valentine resident Raymond Plaisance Sr. said there are currently few options for veterans who need to get to the hospital.
“We’d like to be a role model for everybody (in the parish),” said another veteran in the audience. “I’m sure a lot of other veteran groups will try to do the same thing.”
Daryl Marlbrough was appointed chair, Daniel Lorraine was appointed vice chair, Lindel Toups was appointed secretary, and the board voted to designate the parish finance director as Veterans’ Board treasurer.
Meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Barrios Center in Raceland.
